Judge's Comments on Some Placements:
I was taught in judging Borzoi to, "Find the prettiest dog that can kill a wolf." Since killing a wolf takes strength and mass, plus the ability to run and catch it, I was looking for Borzoi that had size, good bladed bone and musculature, had the proper flowing outline, and a powerful, far-reaching stride when they moved. Feet were an important factor here. And since a dog's mouth is its tool, bite and dentition were factored in. Color and pattern were of no concern, and I mostly discounted coats, given the time of year and where were.
My Best of Breed was a nine year old Veteran Dog, CH Syora's Gallant Fox JC. Truly magnificent! Exhibited everything I was looking for in a Borzoi. He projected a aura of royalty - it was easy to picture him in the place of honor beside the Czar or in full flight chasing a wolf. It is wonderful that he has aged so well and is still in top condition.
The Select Dog, CH Aria's Ain't No Angel, was chosen out of a field of 15 Specials. He is a very, very good example of the breed. On a different day he could easily win Breed.
The Best of Opposite Sex was CH Promise Wind Bneath My Wings Chataqua. A lovely, feminine version of the breed. I loved her outline and movement. It was easy to imagine her on the wolf hunt.
The Select Bitch, CH Nonsuch Some Enchanted Evening was also lovely. Still a young lady, she will have her day, having won over four other Special Bitches.
Winners Dog was Radharc Catalina Sunset, selected from the Bred by Exhibitor class. A very nice young dog with all the proper breed characteristics. He flowed, with power, around the ring and could not be denied the win. He should do well for his breeder and owners.
Winners Bitch was Velos Soliloquy of La Verite, also from he Bred by Exhibitor class. A very promising youngster with appropriate size and femininity. Lovely type and attitude.
Again, thank you all for a wonderful assignment. I look forward to seeing you all again, both as an exhibitor (in Group) and as a judge. It is always nice to see good dogs.
